Second Life Communities and Groups
September 9th, 2007
Second Life communities can be quite extensive, from a few members to groups teaming in the thousands, covering all ranges of topics from education to Star Wars nerds. over the past couple of days, I have became a member of two groups in SL. The first of these is The Galactic Alliance, a group dedicated to the preservation of the Star Wars universe. I had an interesting experience with this group in that I wasn’t able to contact any of them. I read in the group description that they meet on a world called Dagobah. this land did not actually exist anymore so I was not able to get in contact with that group.
The second group I joined on SL was the Welfare Island group. This group occupies its time standing on little multi-colored balls and earn small amounts of Linden dollars (in game money) every ten minutes. This group has hundreds if not thousands of members and was actually one of the friendliest bunch ever. I had multiple issues with getting the welfare system running and the people around me were willing to help and even tell me a method of preventing idling and getting kicked. This was especially when camping to get money.

Me on Welfare Island!
Neither group has bombarded me with any sort of notices or e-mails. i have received a few more spam e-mails advertising with information given to the Welfare Group but nothing that has totally overwhelmed or annoyed me, the people from the Welfare group were very helpful but not very willing to tell me about themselves and were (rightfully) very guarded with their personal information. All in all the communities in SL are very informative, helpful and friendly to interact with.

The blog had good information but it was hard to read because of the writing style (17)
Information is very organized with well-constructed paragraphs. (4)
All topics are addressed and all questions answered with at least 2 sentences about each (4).
Information clearly relates to the main topic. It includes several supporting details and/or examples. (4)
Many grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors. (1)
Reread you sentence before posting, “over the past couple of days, I have became a member of two groups in SL”…the whole sentence should be in past tense, therefore became should be become. Also make sure you capitalization is correct, i.e. over should be Over. “getting kicked” should have been getting kicked off
“This was especially when camping to get money” is an incomplete sentence
“i have received a few more spam e-mails advertising with information given to the Welfare Group but nothing that has totally overwhelmed or annoyed me, the people from the Welfare group were very helpful but not very willing to tell me about themselves and were (rightfully) very guarded with their personal information.” Is a Run of sentence and is difficult to read
I have received a few more advertising spam emails with the information I provided to the Welfare group. However they have not overwhelmed or annoyed me. The people from the Welfare group were very helpful but not willing…
All sources (information and graphics) are accurately documented (4)

At this point it is safe to say that, this so called welfare group is by far the most populous. As unique as I am, I am not a member of this group. I was curious, is this the same welfare group that makes you take online surveys? I tried to join one of those and all it did was put spyware on my computer. *thanks Spyware Doctor, you saved my ass* Anyway, nice blog and it is quite refreshing to see pictures.

Its good to hear that you found groups that were friendly towards you – I know this isn’t always the case, especially since we were instructed to ask rather personal and pointed questions towards people we honestly didn’t know at all. Its also good to hear that you’re furthering the American Dream – getting paid to sit around and do nothing. Kudos to your industriousness, and I wish you the same luck you have had thusfar in all your future SL endeavors.

You, like myself and many others have obviously found the infamous welfare island. I also found the people there to be very helpful and friendly. I had the same problem as you did with your Star Wars group when I joined a Harry Potter fan group which was very inactive. I would suggest trying to find another group that has land that you can actually go to, it might be easier to find people from the group.

It’d be much easier if inactive groups could just disband because then it’d be easier to find helpful groups. And yeah, the welfare is group is really popular and its great that there were plenty of people willing to help! I’m thinking about joining it. Couldn’t hurt to make some extra linden.

This is the first blog i’ve seen with pictures on the SL groups post, so good thinking. Your avatar looks awesome too. At this point i’m thinking about joining the welfare group, bcause i have a lot of things to buy and not a lot of money to buy them with. The Galactic Alliance sounds like a cool group, too bad it has more or less disintegrated. I had the same kind of problems with the members of my groups, but you can find a lot more to talk about once you get to know them.

Good use of pictures, but technically, the Welfare Island is not a group. Many people have had the same problem of joining groups that were inactive. My suggestion would to talk to people in line on the welfare island and ask them question. You will be standing there for a while, why not get to know them? Ask them which groups there are members of. You may be surprised how many things are in commo- i mean, you both are on the same island for the same reason – money!

The pictures you had really helped show us how your groups were. THere were some grammar and spelling errors, but what can I say, we’re human, we’re not perfect. By the way, cool dragon suit, where’d you get that? Welfare Island is a pretty cool place, but I don’t think it’s technically a group. Otherwise, this was a pretty good blog.

I see you had some good luck finding groups. I’d recommend that if you’d like to join some other interesting groups, you should definitely look for a group of your heritage. I tried it with mine, although with the small population of Armenians in the real world, I wasn’t expecting more than 50 people on Second Life…(there were about 9 or 10). You may have better luck than I did, so you should definitely look into it.
